"7-ZIP" is a versatile and compact (no pun intended) compression utility. Highly rated, Free downloads and Open Source is what we like, and 7-Zip fits the bill.

PC users always think of WinZip when they think of file compression, and it's hard to think there may be something better. This little gem unzips lots of file formats, but even better it can cross platforms between MS, Linux and Unix. Read the partial publisher profile below, then read the editor's review and download it for free at CNET DOT COM.

From The 7-Zip Publisher:

"The main features of 7-Zip: High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression. Supported formats: Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR; Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS. For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip. Self-extracting capability for 7z format."
